WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THE DAY
\
Mosaic.Gallery workshops are set-up to inspire you, teach you the basic skills and instill you with confidence to tackle any of your own future mosaic projects.
\
\
These one-day mosaic workshops are both intensive and relaxed. You get to design & create your own mosaic wall hanging while receiving expert personal tuition, practise grouting hands-one using a sample mosaic (as the glue on your own piece will need to dry for about 24 hours!), and learn about materials, tools, basic skills, creative inspiration and finishing touches.

Mosaics.Gallery supplies all materials (although you are welcome to add/bring your own if there is something in particular you want to incorporate) and equipment (some of the tools will be shared), as well as books, short mosaic videos, coffee, tea and snacks. The workshop also includes a free e-book listing all you learn throughout the day which will help you remember what we covered, assist in finding your own basic supplies and the best books on mosaics. \

Why not try your hand at a mosaic portrait?!
\
\
It\'92s not as hard as it looks. Pick an image, perhaps a self-portrait, a photo of a loved one or of a famous person you admire. Find a computer application like Adobe Photoshop or explore an online App with photo edit features. What you\'92re looking for is a Posterisation feature. Use it to reduce the colours in the picture to, say, about 5 colours. That way you keep your mosaicing process simple and only have to find 5 colours to work with. Posterisation also gives the effect of shading, which makes creating your portrait a kind of \'93painting by numbers\'94 exercise. Don\'92t sweat to recreate the exact colours, but go more on the feel of the hues in the face and hair. \

Next, print your posterised image, cover with glad wrap and again with the same size piece of mosaic (fiberglass!) mesh. Tape all of this tightly to a (temporary) board. You don't want it to move while you're gluing on your pieces. Choose your materials: smalti or tile, vitreous glass or broken ceramics. Glue your mosaic onto the mesh following the picture. Stick it onto MDF board when your done, let dry, then grout. And last but not least, don\'92t forget to send us an image of the completed artwork! \

\
Thanks to Sonia King's great love of mosaic and extensive travel, she has been able to collect images and information on the most memorable, interesting and enticing mosaic artworks throughout the world. In her book "Mosaic, Techniques & Traditions", she gives a great overview of the incredible variety of mosaic styles, materials, countries and artists, and teaches you along the way how to become one of those brilliant mosaic makers yourself. \
